The Benefits of Capoeira

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art and self-defense discipline that incorporates fighting techniques, acrobatics, dance, percussion, and songs, in a rhythmic dialogue of body, mind, and spirit. Capoeira was born as an expression of resistance and resilience, and brought spiritual and emotional empowerment to its practitioners.

Around the world, practitioners of ABADÁ-Capoeira embrace respect, socialization and freedom, and we seek to emphasize the lessons inherent in Brazilian cultural and historic roots, including the value of social integration between people of different backgrounds and classes.  We believe in teaching young people and encouraging one another to have good character and be good citizens, and contributing positively to the welfare of the communities in which we work and learn is central to our identity and mission. With our scholarships, ABADÁ-Capoeira DC seeks to develop the knowledge and leadership skills possessed by young people of promise, while also promoting their good health.  Capoeira is associated with physical, mental, and social benefits, particularly for young people whose bodies and minds are growing.  Capoeiristas – people who practice the martial art – gain strength, flexibility, balance, stamina, and rhythm. Capoeiristas who practice with ABADÁ-Capoeira DC become part of a circle of friends who support and encourage one another to grow and contribute positively to the community.  As a group, we participate in food and clothing drives and other charitable activities, so our students learn to be good citizens.  Students also broaden their horizons by learning Portuguese, and Brazilian and world history.

Most importantly, practicing capoeira imparts mental skills such as focus, discipline, and attention, as well as social skills and habits that every successful person needs.  As capoeiristas develop, they gain pride and confidence.  They learn the concentration necessary to evaluate and anticipate their opponents’ moves; the ingenuity and daring needed to surprise an opponent; and the perseverance necessary to advance in the practice of capoeira and in life.
