Giving Tuesday 2025

We would like to share with you the history, Mission and culture of inclusivity which Abada-Capoeira DC practices. CAPOEIRA (pronounced ka-poo-rah) is an Afro-Brazilian martial and art self-defense form that brings together fighting techniques, acrobatics, dance, percussion, and songs, in a rhythmic dialogue of body, mind, and spirit.

The Afro-Brazilian martial art of capoeira can make a difference in people’s lives. Capoeira is an all-inclusive activity in which people of all ages, ethnicities and physical levels can exercise together to connect, break down barriers and build community. Capoeira is such an important art expression that it is part of the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The mission of Abada-Capoeira DC is to promote, spread, and support Brazilian arts and culture through the practice of capoeira, and to use our practice of capoeira and associated arts to build a healthy and more closely connected Washington, DC-area community. We are organized to accomplish charitable and educational goals including working to lessen socio-economic inequality.

Abada-Capoeira DC (ACDC), is a local micro nonprofit (our operating budget is less than $150,000) and Brazilian Arts Center, offering classes in martial arts academies, dance studios, and schools. Abada-Capoeira aims to provide all participants, regardless of socioeconomic status, identity, or ability, to learn the art of capoeira with a view to using the practice as a tool for individual and communal growth.

Abada-capoeira DC is serving the community since 2008. We have been a leader in promoting and supporting Brazilian arts and culture through the practice of capoeira, and to use our practice of capoeira and associated arts to build a healthy and more closely connected Washington, DC-area community. We pursue our mission by coming together regularly outside of classes to share celebrations, and to give back to our community by fulfilling food, clothing & blood drives among other social initiatives.
Thank you for your support.
